On a warm afternoon in May, we met up with Julian and Nakita for an urban-chic engagement photography session along Buffalo's outer harbor. We have to say, when Nakita suggested Silo City for their engagement shoot, we were just as excited as she was to plan it out! With all the changes happening along the Buffalo waterfront, it is really amazing to photograph in an area where old industry is giving way to new green space. Here, the old railway tracks and drawbridges meld with scenic trails and nature preserves.
We started our shoot along the pathways near Silo City. Although we found ourselves surrounded by an unusual evening Spring fog from time to time (go figure), the sun peaked through just enough at the start of our shoot to shed some warm light on the urban grit and grunge.
Since the Ohio Street drawbridge near Silo City was closed to car traffic due to construction, we had the rare opportunity to take an uninterrupted series of photographs standing right on the bridge. How awesome is that!
Julian and Nakita met nearly a decade ago on the job. "She worked in the stock room, I worked on the sales floor," he tells us, "but I always made a way to see her...One day I slipped her my AOL screen name...and it started there." Nakita - you've got mail! :)
Nakita tells us that Julian wasn't as sly as he thought, "Which is why I accepted his AOL," she says. "I gave him a try...since then we've been best friends."
We asked Nakita what it was about Julian that let her know he was the one. "I don’t know; I was just drawn to him. I could tell he was a genuine, loving person. After our first date, I knew it to be true. And he was definitely different than what I was used to dating. I gave him a try, and we fell in love."
Julian tells us he was drawn to Nakita when he first saw her. "When I first met her, I said, this is the girl I’m going to marry. I told her that. My friends would say, 'You better ask her out before it’s too late!' I talked to her and I said to myself, 'something must be wrong, nobody this pretty can be perfect!' I’m lucky I met her."
We have to say, the chemistry definitely shows!
Julian proposed on New Year's Eve. "We went to dinner, so by the time we got home, at 11:15 before the ball dropped, I fell asleep. When I woke up, he was on bended knee, and I had a ring on my finger...I thought I was dreaming!"
Nakita told us that growing up, she didn't want to get married. "But once I got to know him, that instantly changed. So I didn't have a life-long dream of a wedding until I met him. Now I just envision it to be romantic and loving." Beautiful!
We had just settled in for our final shots among the tall grasses at Times Beach Nature Preserve when rain showers returned for the evening. So we wrapped things up - fortunately just after getting two more of our favorites from this session.
Julian and Nakita - we had an amazing time with the two of you! We are really glad we got to be a part of your engagement, and can't wait for your romantic vintage wedding later this summer!
